You would expect a match that ends in 4-4 after 90 minutes and then goes straight to penalties to be absolutely amazing, yet this one was not.
PSV was plagued by injuries in the defensive side, and the line had to be filled with either inexperienced players, Oppegard as LB, new arrival Flamingo as LCB, Schouten playing RCB out of position, although he did do it successfully a few times last season, or the only regular defensive player from last year on the field, Jordan Teze on RB, who seemed to be thinking more about his possible transfer to Monaco, than about the match itself.
It was an absolute abomination of a match, full of defensive errors on both sides. Most players seemed to be thinking this is just another friendly.
The enthusiasm of last season seems to have faded quite quick and if these defensive problems continue, it will be a hard season ahead. Would some extra transfers solve the problems PSV has been having for years with the defense? I doubt it, especially as Teze might leave to Monaco for around 10mil, yet we bought Flamingo for almost 10mil and he is not impressive yet. I do not expect PSV is capable or willing to pay higher prices for players of higher caliber, that could immediately make an impact.
