Pick a refined hobby

I keep a wide array of hobbies and interests. Some I do because I enjoy them, some because I think they are useful and others because I think they are cool, in my eyes or the eyes of others.

Spending time looking at ancient coin auctions online is an interesting activity. You learn a lot about the Roman Empire and you also get to hold a piece of history in your hand once you bought them. Sailing and playing tennis are very cool hobbies, but I cannot really say they are my favorite things in the whole wide world. I do them for the identity I create for myself. Maybe even the self image I create, not necessarily for others. I want to see myself in a certain way, and sailing and tennis will help with that. What a nice upper middle class gentleman I am. You could even call me refined.

One question did pop up in my head a few times recently. If I had a month to live, would I actually collect ancient coins and go for a tennis training session? The answer for most of my weekly leisure activities is an astounding no. Then why continue? Why not strive for time spent with my loved ones, which seems to be one of the things I would want to do as much as possible if I had a clearly defined expiration date.

Why not just stop with the rest?

“When I look back at the past and think of all the time I squandered in error and idleness, lacking the knowledge I needed to live; when I think of how I sinned against my heart and my soul, then my heart bleeds. Life is a gift, life is happiness … Every minute could have been an eternity of happiness! If youth only knew. Now my life will change, now I will be reborn.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky
